Sadly I have gone to the Dark Side (24 May 2017)

After years of running this site, I have now gone to The Dark Side. This web site will continue, but I really need someone new to take over.

I'm going to copy over my original thread from the old forum as we have more upgrades coming soon to our Dandy that others may find useful.

We started to sort our new Dandy this weekend, starting with cleaning it. After seeing the video on this forum we got some of the PVCu cleaner - it works great!

Then we converted all the lights to LED's

Then I made a new larger side panel for the cooker

And then a new shelf to go above the sink area, side panels and hooks are in aluminium.

Now we need to sort out why the tap refuses to work, issues in the wiring somewhere as the pump works fine.

We also removed the door and stripped all the parts off it so we could sand & repaint it, and fitted a new door catch for the open position.

A good days work!

Been busy again today, 3 extra power sockets added, one at the front & 2 above the window at the rear.
Painted the door during the week, got the fun part of refitting the window & rubber tomorrow.

New lock arrived this week, but did not fit the door lock housing? 16.7mm diameter - door handle 16.3mm hole. Hmmm - lucky I can machine it out to fit so all working now.

We have 2 LED lights now, a 50 LED square panel, and a rather groovy 5 metre strip that is remote controlled and had 20 different colours ha-ha! This might end up as a pretty awning light show, but it was only £14.99 so too cheap to pass up.

We also scored a good deal on Ebay for 3 Lumo flourescent caravan lights for only £21 so these will all be tried for the best light/performance next weekend.

Also made a new rear panel for under the cooker - we use 7mm birch plywood at work with a black leather finish - ideal for the panels in a Dandy. Got the drawings done for the CNC machine so can spit them out all day now Might also do CNC drawings for the front & rear panels and door panels in the future, so I can cut new one in minutes then.

I've had a look at the tow ball height and my car tow ball height - level trailer is 13" off ground - car is 19" off ground!!! Looking under the chassis at the Indespension unit fitting I might design a 102mm/4" lift adaptor that can bolt straight in making it a simple 1 hour job to get the Dandy up to modern towing heights.

The new back panel; need to replace the sides at some point - someone has already done them but they are quite warped.

Bit of an update, we camped for the first time 2 weeks ago and all was good
The awning fitted pretty good considering it's not a Designer awning (its for a standard Dandy), not quite wide enough but a little tweaking and it should be good.

We got some flourescents off eBay and also 2 types of LED lights - one long 5m strip and one with 50 led's in a square.

Results are;
Flourescents - fair light but quite localised.
50 led square lamp - fairly poor - very bright but also very localised (like a torch)
5 metre strip - amazing!! (also remote control and 15 different colours too) link here -

Unfortunately I seem to have deleted the photos - but will take more this coming weekend.

I've also stamped out some more saddle brackets in 3mm aluminium plate. These rivet to the front top inside for the awning poles to fit into, as the poles are in a different place as its a narrower awning.

Catriona has made new curtains with some nice Hot Rod material from the States (we are into Hot Rods & Drag racing) which will be put up this weekend too.

Next jobs are to fit the button pins to all of the awning poles to stop them coming apart (only some have these fitted - why are they not on all of the poles??? ) & paint the roof poles white as they look a bit tatty.

Updates now are fitting 12" rims to replace the 10" ones and to design & build some spacers to lift the Dandy off the suspension units.
Photos will follow soon for the wheels as they will arrive tomorrow including new tyres.
I bought them from here;
12" wheels & tyres second item down.

My old 10" wheels will be available if anyone needs some?

New wheels & tyres arrived today, pleasantly surprised to find they look quite sporty which is nice - they look grey but are metallic silver. Tyres are 8 ply so no problems with weight!

Old wheel next to new, showing different size;

Difference is 2.5 inches on this tyre - the other tyre is a different brand and is 1/2 bigger so only 2" difference.

With the trailer set level with the original 10" wheels the towhook was 12" from the ground, with the new tyres it is now 13.5" - so a 1.5" lift.
Towhook on car is 16" so some 2" box section steel spacers with 5mm plates welded to them should see the trailer at 15 7/8" level so perfect for level towing. I'll show photos of the spacers after I build them.
